646f9e108c After rising from his volcanic grave, Godzilla is threatened by a mutated rosebush. Following the events of Godzilla 1985, scientists collect genetic material from the mutated dinosaur Godzilla's scales. A Middle Eastern country wants the samples for their own purposes, but meanwhile, a lonely scientist combines Godzilla's genetic code with those of a rose and his own deceased daughter. The result is Biollante, an eerie plant of titanic proportions. To make matters worse, a psychic woman detects Godzilla stirring from his volcanic prison. The military sends the flying Super-X2 to stop the beast from thrashing Japan, but eventually Godzilla engages the rapidly mutating Biollante in a fight to the death. The movie about Godzilla has been remake with different "enemy" for so many years. The first Godzilla was made around 1950s. Since then Gojira (as the Japanese are calling it), has been fighting with all kind of "human protectors" and always on the loosing side, yet nothing seem to be able to kill it.

After more than 50 years of trying to kill Gojira, the Japanese director are still using the traditional method of bombs, bullets, fire, laser. Of course all these are useless against the Gojira. The same thing happens again on this Gojira vs Biorrante. The Japanese army must be very dumb and stupid to attack the lizard with the weapon that has proved to be ineffective. Okay, a movie does not always follow the human logic, but let's think…. this is the sequel of the previous Gojira movie. If during the previous one the army can not kill or wound the lizard by using normal weapon, where is the logic for them to use similar weapon again on the next bout ?

The acting on this kind of Gojira movies is always on the low quality. This is something which I can not understand. On other title, the Japanese can have a good performers, but for whatever reason, they do not seem to be able to improve the quality of the actors. The acting is so bad that it is almost like a play and not a movie.

I would expect an improvement on the quality, but sadly I am very disappointed with this one, but maybe this is just for the kid's consumption….. This is a Godzilla movie that tells a very different story than the previous films. The root of the story all lies on one aspect-the Godzilla cell. The plot is solid and intriguing - a story about some of the world's power-hungry people who want to get their hands on some Godzilla DNA for their own devious purposes. When the Japanese refuse to hand over the DNA, terrorists release Godzilla from his lair and he begins a new spree of terror. In an act of desperation, a scientist merges some of the Godzilla cells with a rosebud, mutating it into the one of the most unique monsters in the Toho universe - Biollante. The two do battleour protagonists in the film try to track down the terrorists. As a result, what we have is not the usual Godzilla vs. movie with an alien-invasion plot. This one is unique and substantive in its monster origins, plot flow and character development.

While an exciting movie, there are some people that this film could have done without, like the horrible Saradian agent SSS9 and the campy Biomajor people. I have to give credit to this movie, anyhow, because it introduced the Godzilla-centered psychic Miki Saegusa (played by Megumi Odaka). She would take a very significant role in this and the following Godzilla films. Her using her psychic powers to locate Godzilla and stopping him from coming ashore in Osaka was intriguing.

Overall, not a bad Godzilla film. Very distinctive, albeit a little too focused on the human subplot and the military, and the Biollante angle wasn't emphasized enough.

Grade B-
Unlike most movies that have an black backdrop during the credits, the Heisei Godzilla films had special footage that played during the credits. In this film we see the symbolic image of a rose above Earth, showing audiences that Biollante is still alive and a possible hint to her return to Earth in "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla". Yes, in fact there are three. keep in note these scenes can not be seen on the internet anywhere (as farI have searched) or on the Sony Tristar DVD release of the film. In order to see them you must buy the actual Toho DVD, available on Amazon.com and monsterislandtoys.com.

1) Extended footage of Godzilla marching to Lake Ashino

2) At the end of Godzilla and Biollante's first fight, he kills herhe did in the final cut, by setting her on fire with his heat ray. However, in the deleted scene, the golden energy spores left behind her body rise into the air and then cover the shores of Ashino lake in a blanket of beautiful flowers. godzilla is only briefly intested, before leaving. Although Koichi Kawakita (the SFX director) was impressed with his work, the flowers were out of scale, and so the screen was scrapped.

3) there was a radical alternate ending where Godzilla actually dies from the ANEB (Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria) and Biollante, also wounded due to Godzilla's heat ray, swallows Godzilla and both become the golden energy spores seen earlier when Biollante first died. The scene used a combination of anime and live action to depict this, but this was ultimately cut out in order to continue the series . Godzilla died a somewhat similar death six years later in the film "Godzilla vs. Destroyah"

4) There is a famous cut scene where stop motion is used for the first fight scene between Godzilla and Biollante, but this was either cut out because the film makers wanted to continue to use the tradition of suit-mation and practical effects, and or budget constraints.
